More and more companies are going remote and allowing their employees to work from anywhere in the world. If you are a remote worker looking for a new job, there is something you should consider when you are job hunting. Are there companies that will pay you the same salary no matter where you live?

The answer is yes! Many companies are offering location-agnostic pay.

But what is location-agnostic pay? Well, we’re so glad you asked!

A location-agnostic pay model means that where you work does not factor into what your employer pays you. In other words, folks in the same role are paid the same, independent of their location.

In November 2021, Rodolphe, Remotive’s founder, posted this on Twitter:

Here's what we found!

Location-agnostic companies with less than 10 employees

Cal.com

Cal's mission is to connect a billion people by 2031 through calendar scheduling. It's an Open Startup with an 8 people-team: it operates transparently and shares its salaries and core metrics. In this blog post, Peer Richelsen (co-founder and co-CEO) explains what being an open startup means and why the company decided to go with global salaries instead of localized salaries.

Know Your Team

Know Your Team is software that helps managers become better leaders. Their 6 people team gets paid an average San Francisco salary, no matter where they are in the world. Known Your Team started as a tool developed by Basecamp and later on it became a company, with Claire Lew as their CEO.

Location-agnostic companies with 11-50 employees

Basecamp

Basecamp is an all-in-one toolkit for working remotely. They've written a book about remote work that is a must-read for employers and employees alike. Their team is currently made up of 30+ folks distributed in 43 cities in 10 countries. Everyone in the same role gets paid the same: "Our target is to pay everyone at the company in the 90th percentile, or top 10%, of the San Francisco market rates, regardless of their role or where they live."

Daily

With Daily, developers can add live video and audio experiences to any product. The founding team is based in San Francisco but they are a fully-distributed team of 40 folks spanning time zones GMT-9 to GMT+5:30.

Gumroad

Gumroad is an e-commerce platform that helps people sell digital products, memberships, and more. Their team is made up of 48 folks scattered worldwide, and everyone gets paid the same salary.

RevenueCat

RevenueCat is a complete toolkit built for subscription apps. They are a remote-first team with 27 team members based around the globe. They currently pay in the 60th percentile of salaries in the San Francisco market, independent of location.

Wildbit

Wildbit has a 40+ people team that is remote-first and spreads from California to Egypt.

Location-agnostic companies with 50+ employees

Help Scout

Help Scout provides tools for the world's most customer-centric businesses. It has been remote-first for nearly a decade and has 100+ teammates in more than 80 cities worldwide. In 2018, the company updated its salary formula and removed geography as a consideration.

Sourcegraph

Sourcegraph builds universal code search for every developer and company to help them create the software people use every day. It's an all-remote company, with 200+ people working asynchronously across time zones and continents. Their handbook reads: "We do not take your location into account when determining cash and equity compensation. No matter where you live, you will get the same cash and equity compensation."

Toggl

Toggl is the shared brand for Track, Plan, and Hire. Three different products with the same mission—to eliminate stress from the workplace. Toggl has 100+ folks working remotely in more than 40 countries between the three companies. Learn more about how they work here.


There is no one-fits-all solution when it comes to compensation: it depends on the company's values and many other factors. The location-agnostic and the location-based pay models both have their cons and pros. As job seekers, it's essential to take the time to research the company's compensation policy to make sure their culture match ours, and vice versa.
